The Golden Compass

Part 1

One book that I have really enjoyed was The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. It is a great story! I recommend it to anyone who wants Mystery, Adventure, and Magic. Enjoy!A very good book about a little girl named Lyra. She and her demon (little animal that changes shape and expresses emotion) Pan live in Jordan College with there friend Roger. She and Roger do all sorts of things together to get into trouble. Like taking gyptian’s boats, or climbing on rough tops, and wallowing in the mud beds.One day her and Pan are hiding in the retiring room were no girls are aloud, when the master of Jordan College comes and poisons a bottle of wine for her uncle Lord Asrial. When the master leaves her uncle comes. She stops him from drinking the wine. Then members of the church and some very important people from Jordan Collage come to see Lord Asrial and talk about his trip to the North. During the meeting Lyra and Pan are hiding in the Wardrobe when they hear the Master of Jordan Collage talking to the Church leader about the poisoned wine. They are sure that he knew about it but they aren’t sure how he found out. After that comity talks about political things and the market and many other uninteresting things. As soon as the meeting starts finally starts Lord Asrial shows some pictures of the north and of the Northern lights witch he claims to have found the gate to another word. Then he takes a human skull from an air tight case and he claims it to be the head of a famous explorer Stanislaus Grumman. After that he shows some more pictures and this time he shows one of a man and a severed child (child with demon cut away a disgusting thing in there world). Then Lyra is getting tired and takes a coat off the rack a goes to sleep.After the meeting Lyra is awakened by her Uncle and immediately she wants to see the shrunken head of Stanislaus Grumman. But her uncle sends her to bed and he takes off for the North again promising to bring back a trinket from the North.A few more days have passed and Lyra's uncle is long gone. But somebody is up to no good. An organization for the church is capturing children and taking them to the North for experimenting. They quickly get the name called the Gobblers (general obligation board).One day a lady named Mrs. Coulter and her Golden Monkey demon comes and says that Lyra can come and live with her were she will learn to be a lady and go to school to learn. But before that the master of Jordan Collage takes Lyra into his office and gives her the Alethiometer and tells her to keep it away from Mrs. Coulter. That day Roger disappears and nobody knows were to find him so Lyra gets worried that he as been taken by the Gobblers. So then she doesn't know weather she should go with Mrs. Coulter but she does. The servants tell her and that they would find Roger.For the next few months Lyra live happily with Mrs. Coulter and her and Pan enjoy there new lives. One day they decide to look at the Athomomater. She finds four hands three little ones and one big one. She can move the three one by turning the knobs on the side and if she concentrates she can move the big one.The next day Mrs. Coulter decides to have a party and when her and Lyra getting ready she ask Lyra to put away the handbag (it’s what she is holding the Athomomater in). When she refuses the golden monkey attacks Pan. Finally she obeys her and puts away the handbag.That night her and Pan go to the party and talk to the guest like good little people, but they are really planning to run away. As they are leaving Pan gets in a fight with the golden monkey. But they get away and run. When they got tired they meet a man and he asks were they are from. They tell him that they are children of a murderer and that they are bringing him new clothes because his other ones get bloody. After that the go down by the river to plan out how they are going to get to the North. When suddenly they are attacked by several men with wolves demons. When they are about to get caught the gyptian (water people) help them.They take her to their ship and she stays there for a few days before that go to the gyptian council meeting were the every gyption is coming to make a plan on how to go to the North... And save the missing.
